If rearranging your furniture would increase your health, improve your finances and enhance your relationships, would you be interested? Although not a panacea for every aspect of life, the ancient Chinese art of feng shui can have a positive impact on your every life.
Basic Feng Shui
Everything on earth is composed of energy. Place furniture and household objects so that energy is properly directed and its maximum benefits are achieved according to the function of the room. Energy must be able to flow freely. When it does not, it stagnates and so does your life.
Your home is divided into a baqua, or nine areas, as follows:
This diagram is for the entire home and usually, the front door is on the bottom in the knowledge, career or travel area. The traditional eastern baqua is based on the location of the front door, the western baqua is not. Although either method is effective, they should not be combined.
Colors are based on the five elements and are integral to feng shui; they can contribute to or hinder the flow of energy.
•Fire: Vibrant, vivid color such as red, orange, bright yellow, purple and so forth; use in south, southwest and northeast areas.
•Earth: Neutral tones such as beige, ecru, pale yellow and so forth; use in southwest and northeast areas.
•Metal: Gray is the sole color and should be used in the northwest and west areas.
•Wood: Green and brown are wood colors; use in south, southeast and east areas.
•Water: Blue and black; use in the north, east and southeast areas.
The Living Room
Feng shui avoids the use of sharp corners because energy needs to flow freely. Therefore, when selecting occasional tables and the like, choose those that have rounded corners, this also applies to sofas, chairs and so forth. All seating furniture should face the front door or be able to view it but not be placed in front of it as this will block the flow of energy.
Tall items should be balanced with short items; vibrant colors should be balanced with soft colors; horizontal items should be balanced with vertical items; knickknacks should be minimal.
The wealth area of the living room should contain a large, healthy plant, the television or a beautiful piece of artwork that does not contain water.
Aquariums are beneficial because the movement of the fish promotes the free flow of energy and should be placed in the northern area.
The head of your bed should be against a wall but not in the coffin position. That is, your feet should not be pointed toward the door.
Headboards should be sturdy and preferably of wood rather than sharp metal.
Ceiling fans, beams, mirrors and so forth should not be directly over your bed.
All objects should be paired; two flowers, two candlesticks, two nightstands and so forth. Paired items promote the concept of a couple. Water should not be in the bedroom even if it’s in the form of a fountain, an aquarium or a picture. Water freely flows and can promote infidelity. Similarly, the presence of a television can compromise a relationship.
Beds should be comfortable and sturdy as this indicates the stability of the relationship. Both partners should have equal access to their side of the bed as this promotes equality in the relationship.
This room is the center of your family and directly affects your prosperity. It should be well lit and kept clean and clutter free. Sharp objects such as knives should be stored out of sight; items should not be hung overhead.
Ideally, the stove and refrigerator should not be adjacent.
Mirrors reflecting the stove are said to increase abundance. Yellow promotes digestion and is an excellent color choice for the kitchen.
Ideally, the bathroom door should be kept shut since it contains many drains that allow energy to escape. Since this is not always possible, keep the drain plugs in and the toilet lid down in order to minimize the loss of energy. Since mirrors reflect energy, placing a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door can help minimize energy loss.
Even though a basement is below ground, it can still have good feng shui. Be sure to keep it clean and tidy. Your basement should have adequate lighting and air circulation and the same principles apply to your basement as apply to the rest of your home.
Since basements can be afflicted with mold, make sure yours is free of it. For smaller areas, washing the area with a disinfecting solution of ¼ cup to ½ cup of chlorine bleach per gallon of water can eliminate many mold issues. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and discard them afterward as well as any rags used in the process. Place gloves and rags in a plastic bag before discarding.
Larger areas or areas infected with certain types of mold may require professional eradication.
